The Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare currently works with a network of 18 leading hospitals and health systems to develop solutions to the most pressing quality and safety problems facing health care organizations today. These hospitals and health systems have a commitment and competency in applying Robust Process ImprovementTM (RPI) methods and tools to improve their internal operational and clinical care processes. These methods include Lean Six Sigma, change management process and tools to achieve high reliability.

Hospitals and health systems that participate with the Center for Transforming Healthcare:

  • Have applied RPI methods to various health care processes.
  • Agree to complete two to three Center-sponsored projects within the first two years.
  • Provide support for their improvement team throughout the project(s).
  • Share data and project-related materials with The Joint Commission that in turn will be shared by health care organizations throughout the country.

In addition to meeting these requirements, these hospitals have taken a leadership role in patient safety and quality improvement and have demonstrated that they can create an organizational culture that is conducive to supporting and motivating staff to aspire to excellence.
