Timothy Babineau, M.D.
President and CEO, Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital
Timothy Babineau, M.D., became president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital on October 1, 2008, and president and CEO of The Miriam Hospital on September 8, 2009.
Babineau was the senior vice president and chief medical officer for the University of Maryland Medical Center and School Of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. Before the 2005 appointment at the University of Maryland, Babineau held numerous administrative positions, including vice chairman of the division of surgery, surgical residency program director and director of the center for minimally invasive surgery at Boston Medical Center and surgeon-in-chief and medical director for the Boston Medical Center Surgical Associates at Quincy Medical Center. He has been a trustee for the University of Massachusetts and a member of its Audit and Finance Committee.
Babineau is a board-certified general surgeon. He received his bachelor’s degree from the College of the Holy Cross and his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts. He also received a master’s degree in business administration from Boston University. He completed his internship and residency at New England Deaconess Hospital as well as a fellowship in surgical nutrition and metabolism.
He has also been associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland and Boston University School of Medicine and assistant professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School.
Babineau has been named to Top Doctors in America by Boston Consumers’ Checkbook and America’s Top Surgeons Award by Consumer Reports and the Consumers Research Council. He is the recipient of numerous teaching and academic awards, including an award for excellence in teaching at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the dean’s award for academic excellence and the Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society at Boston University School of Management and Best Scientific Paper Award from the New England Surgical Society. Babineau also was class valedictorian at the College of the Holy Cross and the top medical graduate at the University of Massachusetts
Babineau is the editor of the Journal of Surgical Innovation and Research and has served on the editorial boards of Current Surgery and Contemporary Surgery. He is also a guest reviewer for the Journal of Laparoendoscopic Surgery and the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and serves as a book reviewer for Medical Science Books. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, chapters, abstracts and original reports and has lectured throughout the country. He has served as a principle investigator or co-principle investigator on several research studies.
He is a member of the TeenAIDS Board of Trustees and the American Red Cross LifeBoard.
A Massachusetts native, he and his wife Mora have two daughters, Kate and Marina.
