Richard P. MillerRichard P. Miller
President and CEO
Virtua
Marlton, New Jersey

Richard P. Miller is the President/CEO of Virtua, a non-profit, multi-hospital health care system offering a full continuum of acute, outpatient and long-term care. Headquartered in Marlton, New Jersey, Virtua Health was formed in 1998 by the merger of two health systems.  Since then, Miller has led the system in innovative directions by creating a values-based culture defined by the "Star Initiative," adopting Six Sigma, creating a learning lab environment modeled after Lean strategies, partnering with industry leaders such as GE, and transforming a group of community-based hospitals into technologically advanced regional medical centers.

As a result, Virtua has become an international model for effective health care management and has served as host to domestic and international health care organizations that want to replicate  Virtua’s success.  It has been honored twice with the New Jersey Governor's Award for Clinical Excellence and recognized with the Leadership Award for Outstanding Achievement by Voluntary Hospitals of America.  For three consecutive years, Virtua ranked as the #1 Best Employer in the Delaware Valley by its employees and the Philadelphia Business Journal and has been entered into the PBJ Hall of Fame.  Virtua is the recipient of the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 Consumer Choice Awards by National Research Corporation.

Creating innovative alliances has been a part of Miller's success formula.  In addition to an enterprise alliance with GE Healthcare, Virtua has formed clinical alliances with nationally renowned organizations such as the Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children.  These alliances have enabled Virtua to create learning labs that provide its physicians and clinicians the ability to adopt the most advanced medical technology while providing opportunities for others to learn from their experience.

While developing and leading groundbreaking strategies, Miller stays close to the communities that Virtua serves.  He is a board member of the March of Dimes of Southern New Jersey and served as chairman of the March of Dimes WalkAmerica Campaign from 1996 to 1999.  He is also a member of the American Heart Association board and he served as chairman of the Arthritis Association Walk for Southern New Jersey in 2004 and 2005.  As an industry leader, Miller served as chairman, Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Hospital Association in 2008 and continues service on the Executive Committee and board as immediate past chairman.  He is past chairman and lifetime member of Southern New Jersey Chamber of Commerce board.

Miller has received many awards and recognitions for his leadership and service to the community. He received the "Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award" by the Boy Scouts of America and has been named a "Person to Watch" by Philadelphia Magazine.  He has also received national recognition as the Lean Six Sigma "CEO of the Year" for 2008.  He served on the Governor's Committee on Benchmarking for Quality and Efficiency, and on the NJ Healthcare Access Study Commission.  Miller is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves as a trustee of the National Quality Forum.  A graduate of Mount St. Mary's College, he earned his MBA from Southern Illinois University.
