William D. Petasnick is president and CEO, Froedtert Hospital and Froedtert & Community Health System, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Prior to joining Froedtert, Petasnick was deputy director and chief operating officer, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; director of operations and chief operating officer, University of North Carolina Hospital; and senior associate director, University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics.
Petasnick is the Immediate Past Chair of the American Hospital Association (AHA) Board of Trustees. Appointed as an at-large AHA Board member in 2004, he is a member of the Executive Committee. Previously, he served on the Operations Committee and chaired the Long Range Policy Committee and Audit Committee. He also chaired the AHA Task Force on Delivery System Fragmentation. Petasnick has served as a member of the governing council of the Section for Metropolitan Hospitals, an alternate state and section delegate, and most recently as a state delegate for AHA Regional Policy Board 5. He has also served as an AHA representative to the National Resident Matching Program, and as ex-officio member of the Committee on Health Professions (formerly Coordinating Committee on Medical Education).
Petasnick was the 2003 chair of the Council of Teaching Hospitals and is also a board member of the University HealthSystem Consortium. He has chaired the board of the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA), served on its Council on Public Policy, and was awarded the WHA 2005 Distinguished Service Award.
In addition, Petasnick is currently serving on the boards of the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the Greater Milwaukee Committee, Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, the Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership. He has also recently been appointed to the Board of Visitors for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Political Science.
He is a member of the Downtown Rotary Club of Milwaukee, and was awarded the Rotary Club of Milwaukee Person of the Year Award in 2006.
In the spring of 2007, he was given an honorary doctorate in Health Management from University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee in recognition of his national leadership role in health services administration, and was the first such individual to receive this honor from the University of Wisconsin system.
Petasnick is an adjunct associate professor of health management at the University of Iowa. He earned a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.H.A. from the University of Minnesota. Petasnick is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
