Trinity Health - CEO Statement

Joseph Swedish
President and CEO
Trinity Health

It is an exciting opportunity for Trinity Health and our Ministry Organizations to participate in the inaugural project of The Joint Commission’s Center for Transforming Healthcare. This is an opportunity to take part in solving chronic and dangerous problems that occur in hospitals nation-wide.

Trinity Health strongly supports the Center for Transforming Healthcare’s process of providing solutions for health care issues using process improvement methods such as Six Sigma. The use of these methods will provide highly reliable measurement systems and effective, sustainable solutions to some of healthcare’s most vexing problems.

As the name of the Center implies, we are looking to transform health care. We recognize that health care will not be transformed by making small incremental improvements. Breakthrough progress requires a systems approach. In the Center’s pilot project, we are studying hand hygiene. For the hand hygiene process to be transformed, we have to address everything about hand hygiene comprehensively. Through the Center’s methods we can be assured that hand hygiene is being addressed in its entirety.

Astounding as it may seem, poor compliance with hand hygiene is a persistent problem among health care providers. Year after year, it shows up in the medical literature, and for decades it has evaded a sustainable solution. This project is an opportunity for some of the highest quality hospitals and health systems in the nation to study the issue, and identify best practices for other hospitals and health systems to implement; and this project is just the tip of the quality iceberg.

The Center for Transforming Healthcare is poised to engage in a number of breakthrough process improvement projects, which will make a transformational improvement in the quality and safety of health care. We are pleased to be a part of this groundbreaking project and a partner with the Center in this important work.
