Components of a High Reliability Partnership

High reliability health care refers to patient care that is consistently excellent and safe over long periods across all services and settings. Achieving high reliability requires:

  1. Leadership committed to the goal of zero harm.
  2. An organizational safety culture where all staff can speak up about things that would negatively impact the organization.
  3. An empowered work force that employs Robust Process Improvement® (RPI®) tools to address the improvement opportunities they find and drive significant and lasting change.

Building an Improvement Culture

Employees who have performance improvement expertise will have the mindset to see opportunities for improvement and the skills to act on these opportunities, driving positive change and innovation.  They will lead the way to zero harm.

What is Robust Process Improvement?

Robust Process Improvement® (RPI®) is a blended performance improvement model that incorporates Lean Six Sigma and formal change management – methods that address efficiency, empowerment, quality, and the behavioral side of change.

Safety problems in health care persist because they are complex. Given this complexity, it is important to understand the true reasons why something isn’t working in order to improve it. RPI is the most effective set of tools that can handle the range of quality and safety challenges faced by health care organizations today because of its emphasis on finding the root causes of failure as a precondition to developing and implementing solutions.

RPI Roles

The Center works with health care organizations to help them build internal process improvement expertise by training key staff to serve in various performance improvement roles: 

Change Leader
A Change Leader is an expert in change management techniques. Change Leaders help an organization promote change and increase its capacity to prepare for, commit to, and champion improvement. Change Leaders increase the speed in which the proposed improvement is accepted and reinforce its effectiveness.

Green Belt
A Green Belt develops expertise in RPI tools and methodology, while working on a performance improvement project. Green Belts will lead or staff improvement initiatives so that you achieve organizational goals.

Black Belt
A Black Belt is a full time RPI practitioner. He or she is an expert in Lean Six Sigma and facilitating change tools and methods, and how to apply these to improvement projects. A Black Belt’s job is to lead improvement initiatives, coach and mentor and teach RPI-trained staff.
