Safety culture is the product of individual and group beliefs, values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and patterns of behavior that determine the organization’s commitment to quality and patient safety.
Our TRIO program instills an approach of “Trust, Report and Improve Organizations” to help health care leaders transform their internal cultures by creating systems to empower safety, trust, and resilience.
The Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare’s TRIO program uses strategic assessments, structured training, and proven change management methodologies in collaboration with Center coaches to help organizations efficiently identify and tackle barriers to safety within their own culture.
There is not a one-size-fits-all approach to safety. Our program was designed to help health care organizations transform their internal cultures and cultivate an environment where the quality and safety of both staff and patients is prioritized.
A fully functional safety culture contributes to increased positive patient outcomes, improved quality of care, heightened patient satisfaction, elevated staff engagement and retention, and even financial strength.
How Does TRIO Work?
- Conduct In-Depth Assessments
Each TRIO engagement begins with comprehensive assessments to identify where the organization falls on the safety culture spectrum, using structured surveys, focus groups and a comprehensive document review that will determine the risks and opportunities.
- Identify Unique Organizational Needs
The data collected in the initial assessments is used to identify opportunities within the organization, helping inform a personalized approach to address the organization’s precise safety culture needs to optimize behaviors and practices.
- Conduct Training Sessions to Identify a Path Forward
The Center team hosts training sessions and workshops with small groups of leaders, with a goal of creating an improved safety culture based on a strong foundation of trust. In these sessions, Center coaches serve as a partner in developing an action plan to achieve the organization’s specific goals. Together, we establish measurements to determine shared success – and to celebrate wins.
- Serve as a Helping Hand Along the Way
The team continuously offers support and counsel to the organization and their leaders as they address their challenges. The Center team will be there to provide insight, help address pitfalls and cheer them on every step of the way.
- Sustain Improvements
While improvement work is a continuous process, it shouldn’t feel like starting over every few years, as so many approaches often do.
